I mostly use stone and antlers tools for my percussion flaking, and use copper for my pressure flaking. This type of knapping is generally called “Abo”. This way is nearly identical to the original primitive way of flint knapping. I use no saws, drills, grinders etc. There are several different types of knapping that are better described in other publications. I use several types of antler including: elk, axis, moose, and white tail. The material I use comes from all over the world. I purchase exotic material from Brazil, Australia, Africa, India, Mexico etc. But most of my material is from here in Texas. I especially like petrified woods, with Palmwood as one of my favorites. I also use chert, flint, jasper, obsidian and opals. Most of my material is heat treated in a kiln. Most of the items I make are designed to be used and usually have sharp edges. I do make some items such as crosses and effigies that are for ornamental use. All the knives are made to be used and I use them every chance I get. Arrows and knives I create are all made of natural items. I use real sinew, hand cut shafts, deer leather, and pine pitch glue to put them together. I do make custom pieces and price varies according to the order. The typical 2 inch arrowhead takes about 30 minutes to make. Time to make one increases greatly as the size increases. Some large blades take days to make. |
